NexusNet Regional Stakeholders Forum on Resource Recovery and Reuse on the Water-Energy-Food Nexus for a Low-Carbon Economy, held in Rabat, Malta on 14th of May.
NexusNet proudly hosted the Regional Stakeholders Forum on Resource Recovery and Reuse within the context of the Water-Energy-Food Nexus for a Low-Carbon Economy at the Chajn National Water Conservation Awareness Centre in Rabat.
The inaugural presentation was conducted by the Chair, Professor Chrysi Laspidou, in conjunction with the event’s host, Mr. Manuel Sapiano, and Malta’s Minister for the Environment, Energy, and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour, Ms. Miriam Dalli. The event was a significant success, illuminating critical facets of sustainability, integrated planning, and multilevel collaboration.
Interconnected Solutions emerged as a central theme in the discourse, highlighting the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration and integrated strategies in tackling the nexus of water, energy, and food systems. The forum presented compelling case studies that illustrated how the Water-Energy-Food Nexus (WEF-Nexus) facilitates synergies, thereby promoting impactful and sustainable solutions that are in alignment with the European Union’s green agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Policy integration has been underscored as a pivotal theme, underscoring the essential role of governance structures and policy frameworks in facilitating resource recovery and reuse. Participants examined how effectively designed policies can expedite the adoption of circular and sustainable practices, thereby contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to water quality, energy access, and food security.
Community Engagement and Social Impact were also underscored. The forum highlighted inclusive models that amplify the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives through the active involvement of local communities. These models not only support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to equity, poverty alleviation, and resilience but also foster a collective sense of ownership and empowerment among community members.
The forum convened experts from academia, industry, and policy circles to facilitate a comprehensive examination of the role of the WEF-Nexus as a catalyst for the European Union’s green agenda. It emphasized the potential of resource recovery and reuse to promote systemic transformation towards a low-carbon and sustainable future.
Appreciation is expressed to all participants and contributors whose engagement was instrumental in the success of the event. Through collective commitment and ongoing collaboration, progress toward a more resilient and sustainable future is not only attainable but also inevitable.
