Introduction
Welcome to the picturesque shores of Bizerte, one of the most attractive towns in northern Tunisia. In this blog post, we embark on a journey to unravel the pollution challenge that threatens the historic old port of Bizerte. With its unique mix of geographical features, cultural heritage, and economic activities, this enchanting region is struggling with a pollution problem that requires immediate attention. We will examine water pollution and the ongoing efforts to preserve this jewel.
Geographical Characteristics
The Old Port of Bizerte, located in the heart of the old town, is a charming refuge. White houses, lively cafés and colorful fishing boats surround its small harbor basin. Bizerte thrives on various economic activities, including fishing, trade, and tourism.
Issues Related to Pollution
Beneath the surface of this historic harbor, there is a growing pollution problem, particularly from plastic waste. Sewage discharges from the ONAS (National Office for Sewage Disposal), uncontrolled boat maintenance, and accumulated waste pose a significant threat to the harbor’s ecosystem and the surrounding waters. The impact goes beyond the environmental sphere, affecting Bizerte’s social fabric, economic prospects, and cultural heritage.
Efforts to Resolve Pollution Issues
The Old Port is under the supervision and direct responsibility of the Municipality of Bizerte (since September 2005), as stated in a press release issued by the Ministry of Local Affairs and Environment on May 6, 2021. The same statement highlights, in particular, the failure to carry out maintenance and dredging work in the port. It also mentions the lack of control of the sources of pollution and the various waste disposals in the port, as well as the municipality’s failure to carry out the necessary water quality analyses. In this context, the “Bizerta Maritime Association” signed a partnership agreement with the Municipality of Bizerte on May 28, 2020. The main objective of this agreement is to support the municipality in the areas of environment, awareness, and sustainable development.
he association has also set itself the goal of revitalizing the Old Port and cleaning it up. Consequently, they have organized several initiatives in this direction, including dredging the seabed and cleaning the port’s old shipyard site.
These efforts complement various initiatives by the authorities around the port, such as creating a new pedestrian zone, installing colorful facades on residential buildings, and renovating the House of Crafts. All these efforts aim to restore the Old Port as the city’s main attraction.
Conclusion
The preservation of the historic port of Bizerte is not only about preserving a picturesque place but also about protecting the environment. By tackling the pollution problem, we want to ensure that the Vieux Port of Bizerte remains a symbol of cultural richness and environmental sustainability for future generations.
